Aiming to produce reproductively confined Atlantic salmon, Wargelius et al. (2016) knocked out dnd, which encodes a factor required for survival of germ cells. The induced dnd mutations produced fish lacking germ cells. Kleppe et al. (2017) showed that germ cell-free salmon remained immature and did not undergo puberty.
