The foundation of genetic improvement is a well-structured breeding program with a clear breeding objective. Within a structured breeding program, reproductive and molecular biotechnologies, such as ART and GS, can be applied to further improve rates of genetic gain by effecting one or more of the components of the breeder’s equation (Lush 1937): (1) increase selection intensity (i), (2) increase selection accuracy (r), (3) decrease the generation interval (L), and (4) increase genetic variation (σA)
